Our son started using the Barton Reading and Spelling System when he was in 5th grade. At that time, he was still at a first-grade reading level, and his self-esteem was at an all-time low. The prospects of going to St. Ambrose Academy (known for their rigorous classical approach to Catholic Education) like his older sister and brother, seemed to be all but impossible. We knew he was smart, but none of the extra support he was getting at school was helping him improve his reading, writing and spelling skills which held him back in all areas of his learning. I began tutoring him with a multi-sensory Orton-Gillingham based program and things started to change. I learned all I could about dyslexia and shared what I was learning with his teachers. Teachers began to learn about dyslexia and became partners with us in helping our son achieve academic success. Our son has worked so hard in overcoming his struggle and continues to become more and more academically independent. We look forward to the day that he walks across the stage to collect his high school diploma!
